Bulbophyllum graveolens is found in New Guinea in rainforests on tree trunks at elevations of 100 to 600 meters as a very large, single leafed, hot to warm growing epiphyte with ovoid to almost elliptic pseudobulb carrying a single, erect, elliptic, obtuse-apiculate, gradually narrowing below into the shortly petiolate base leaf that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an erect to arching, 23 cm long, slender, bracteate inflorescence which has an apical umbell of many [8 to 9] long-lasting, carrion scented flowers that are held below the leaves occcuring in the Autumn.
