Bulbophyllum membranaceum is found in Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Papua and New Guinea, Solomon Islands Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu in lowland forests at elevations of sea level to 450 meters as a mini-miniature sized, hot growing epiphyte with 5 mm to 5 cm spaced, conical-ovate pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, petiolate, broadly elliptic leaf that blooms on a subsessile, suberect, basal, single flowered inflorescence sometimes arising basally and often arising directly from the rhizome away from the pseudobulb.
